oh my god ok can i just. talk about. this situation that unfolded on tumblr. because it was wild

ok so it started with this twitter screenshot:


and whether you agree with him or not, his intended message is "policing what kind of art other people create because of your own disgust response is in line with fascist behavior", but made snappy for a twitter comeback. not "you are a fascist" exactly, but more "kill the cop in your head". maybe phrased in an incendiary way, but that's not the point.

so the first response is


already we have a very "piss on the poor" reaction. whether you agree with his statement or not, this is NOT what he was saying.

then we have some responses attempting to explain, i think they couldve been more succinct and didnt entirely argue the correct point(i.e. thats a misinterpretation of his words) but whatever, theyre not Wrong and theyre a good attempt

(<- something they were not even originally accused of being). im losing my mind??? im losing my mind. after arguing what wasnt the point, they then defend themselves by using a word coined by the people theyre trying to distance themselves from

i politely interject to let them know that degenerate was coined by fascists, and is therefore not the exact message they want to be sending no matter what side of the argument theyre on.

THEN. THEY FOLLOW ME BACK. AND SEND ME THIS MESSAGE????

as per the screenshot i didnt really know what to say so i just went for the polite dismount. and intend to ignore them in the future.

On a less screamy note, it's incredible how many words made it into language via fascism. I'm not in favour of banning them but it would be great if people were a little more conscious of it before throwing them around.

There's a Weimar Republic/Third Reich era diary by a German linguistics professor, Victor Klemperer, who notes all the new words the Nazis introduced or twisted to their use and it taught me a LOT about where so many words/meanings still in common use in German have their root.

I KNOW, RIGHT??? I was so bewildered when they followed me, and then extra bewildered when they messaged me. My first thought was "maybe just don't degrade people, please?" ToT

On your other note, that sounds really interesting! There are SO many dogwhistles out there, words woven secretly into the language that then go on to become common use, it makes my head spin to think about it sometime. I don't expect anyone to know all of them, or refrain from using a common word in common conversation, but like you said it'd be best to use them with care abd caution. And the irony of using that word in that context... I just had to say something. Augh
